Our Story
Origins and Purpose
SkillsEngine, based in Austin, Texas, was founded in 2015 at Texas State Technical College (TSTC)—the only public U.S. higher education institution funded based on the career outcomes of its graduates. Facing the challenge of needing to continuously align curriculum with real-time industry demands, TSTC looked for a tool to help and found none that were up to the challenge. Instead, they decided to create their own–and so SkillsEngine was born.
The Challenge and Our Response
The initiative began with 'TSTC Forecasting', a project designed to forecast the evolving technical skills required across Texas. This initiative highlighted a statewide need for a robust system to track and forecast skill changes. Our collaboration with SkillsNet, a Texas-based firm specializing in IO Psychology and job analysis, further pushed the development of innovative solutions. With support from the Texas Workforce Commission, we aimed to revolutionize the way skills are defined, validated, and maintained.
Innovation and Intellectual Property
Our collaboration faced a significant hurdle with the sudden passing of the SkillsNet founder which stalled the development of our comprehensive skills data library. In response, and to honor our original shared vision, TSTC acquired the intellectual property from SkillsNet which enabled us to forge ahead. This acquisition included a patent for a groundbreaking system designed to collect, analyze, validate, and manage skills data which now forms the backbone of the SkillsEngine platform.
Achievements and Innovations
Since our inception, SkillsEngine has developed a suite of tools that facilitate better communication and collaboration among educators, industry leaders, and workforce professionals. Our achievements include four software platforms, four APIs, three experimental AI applications, an extensive skills language library, and our patented skills management system.
